PROJECT OVERVIEW

Jacobs Engineering Group is one of the largest and most diverse providers of technical, professional and construction services worldwide. They were selected by the City of Seattle to provide construction management services for the Waterfront Seattle Program — specifically the rehabilitation of the city’s historic Pier 62. Seattle’s Waterfront is a huge draw for tourists and locals alike and is a major economic driver for the city.

Built in 1901, Pier 62 needed infrastructure improvements to help enhance its safety and sustainability. Pier 62 has long served as a popular and vibrant location for concerts, movies, and other recreational events; its rehabilitation has ensured it remains a community gathering place while being both safer and having a reduced environmental impact.

Jacobs completed construction on Pier 62 in 2020. Currently, they are poised to assist with the removal of Pier 63 which will help improve the nearshore habitat for marine life.

Construction of the replacement pier consisted of removing aging wood and replacing it with 175 steel piles poured with 214 new concrete deck panels. The resulting 40,000 square foot space serves as both a park and outdoor event space for movies, concerts, and other events organized by Friends of Waterfront Seattle. Residents and tourists alike can access the water through a floating dock and enjoy views of the Seattle skyline, Elliot Bay, and the Olympic mountain range.

Goals

With a history of delivery excellence, Jacobs wanted to equip their people with best-in-class technological solutions. Backed by years of careful thought and planning between agencies, the Seattle Department of Transportation was also committed to carrying out the $29 million dollar project with the best resources available—including investing in the most effective inspection and verification technology.

Specifically, they were seeking a technology that would enhance their work by providing:

  • A higher quality of oversight
  • Stronger risk management solutions
  • Simple and efficient collection of real-time data through photos and videos
  • The ability to track equipment and personnel in the field
  • A simple way to upload reference files and flag areas of on-site concern
  • A method for sharing information instantaneously with project stakeholders

Solutions

Equipped with HeadLight’s Fieldbook, Jacobs engineers, inspectors, and project managers compiled and had access to a consistent visual source of truth. This level of data collection and sharing proved instrumental in achieving their goals: Teams were able to provide higher quality oversight in addition to stronger risk management solutions for the City of Seattle — thus helping ensure taxpayer dollars were used efficiently.

Additionally, Fieldbook allowed construction project inspectors to collect real-time data with photo and video capabilities, track equipment and personnel in the field, upload reference files, flag areas of on-site concern, and share this information with project stakeholders in real-time.

“The HeadLight platform enables us to quickly capture and catalog project work progress using media and location information and then communicate in real-time with engineers and the project owner, Seattle DOT, to efficiently deliver the project.”

Outcomes

By incorporating HeadLight’s Fieldbook into their digital construction management system for the Pier 62 project, Jacobs was confident they had the knowledge, insights, and capabilities to deliver on their outlined goals. Jacobs’ inspectors, project managers, and partners were able to quickly capture, share, and act on visual evidence and field data from the jobsite.

Teams were able collaborate more easily; visual documentation updates were available to project stakeholders from day one, thus improving transparency and communication. Additionally, HeadLight helped minimize project risk and reduce costs by accelerating issue resolution and project delivery.

Construction on Pier 62 was completed in 2020 with plans to remove Pier 63 forthcoming. Today, Pier 62 is open to the public: The new space includes handrails, embedded LED lighting, and flexible seating. The rebuilt pier also provides short-term moorage, while its park serves as a vibrant space for visitors to appreciate the surrounding natural beauty — all while providing a safer, more sustainable space for residents, tourists, and wildlife alike.
